Appearance

True to their parents, Maltipoos come in a small size with all-around adorable features. They are elegant, graceful, cuddly, and wonderfully fluffy. Like their parents, adult Maltipoo dogs weigh between 5 and 10 pounds and stand at 9-12 inches tall. Features Maltipoos inherit from their parents include dark round eyes, loose hanging ears, button noses, and an upward curled tail with plenty of fluff. Their build is compact and well-proportioned, and despite their delicate appearance, they are quite resilient.

Most Maltipoo adults have a wavy-curly coat and although rarely, there are some that can inherit the Maltese’s long, straight hair. Maltipoos can also come in a variety of beautiful colors and color combinations with various patterns and markings. The most common Maltipoo colors include white, white with black, black, brown, chocolate, red, apricot, cream, and cream with white.

Temperament

Docile, warm, and loving, Maltipoos are the fur babies you need to have around anytime you feel down. These dogs are renowned for their therapeutic behavior. They are gentle, cuddly, and happy all the time. Their contagious good mood and positive outlook on life are enough to put a smile on anyone’s face. Maltipoo puppies inherit many wonderful qualities from their parents, but their most important ones are their friendliness, intelligence, and calmness.

These dogs are kind and caring towards their families, gentle and playful with children, and very open and accepting of strangers. They don’t make the best guard dogs since they are much too friendly, but they are suited for watchdog duties since they tend to bark-alert to anything amiss.

Like most crossbreed puppies, Maltipoos take after the temperaments and personalities of their parent breeds, and since both the Maltese and the Poodle dog breeds are renowned for their outgoing personalities and gracious nature, Maltipoo puppies come with these traits too. Maltipoos thrive in a setting where there are plenty of fun activities to be enjoyed but also enough relaxation to be had.

Care

Maltipoo Grooming

Adult Maltipoo dogs have rich, luxurious coats that, depending on their length, have moderate to low grooming requirements. Short hair Maltipoos can be brushed once every few days and as often as once every week. Maltipoos that have a longer coat should be brushed every other day to keep their hair from getting tangled. Bathing should be done on a monthly basis or sooner if your Maltipoo becomes friends with muddy puddles.

Like all dogs, Maltipoos can be prone to ear infections, so it is best to clean their ears frequently and check for bad odor or skin rashes. Brushing your dog’s teeth will also benefit them as most dogs can be prone to dental issues. Dental sticks and chew toys are a great way to keep up with your dog’s dental hygiene. Your Maltipoo might also need to have its nails trimmed every now and then if they become long enough to scratch the floor as they walk. Nail trimming is best done after your dog’s monthly bath when the nails are softer.

Maltipoo Exercise Needs

Maltipoo dogs are a moderately active dog breed that don’t need a tiring exercise routine every day. Generally, most Maltipoo adults will need between one and three daily walks to be happy. Their walks can include a trip to the dog park, a game of fetch, or a simple walk around the block. Some Maltipoo dogs are more energetic than others and might need a longer daily routine.

Maltipoo Health

Like all crossbreeds of two purebred dogs, Maltipoos benefit from hybrid vigor which allows them to be protected from developing certain health problems that their parent breeds are known to suffer from. Although most Maltipoo dogs are unlikely to develop any of these, hypo cataracts, patellar luxation, and white shaker syndrome are possible in some dogs.

Maltipoo Life Span

Maltipoos have a lifespan of 12 to 15 years, although there have been reports of Maltipoos living for 17+ years. To give your Maltipoo dog the best chance of living more than 15 years, make sure to never miss regular vet check appointments, supply your dog with good quality food, and provide the recommended amount of daily exercise.

Maltipoo Training

Given that the Poodle is the second most intelligent dog breed in the world, you can expect your little Maltipoo puppy to be all ears when it comes to training. Maltipoo puppies are renowned for their intelligence, just as their parents are. They are quick to learn their basic commands, and more than happy to take on some challenges in obedience and puppy tricks training. The best way to train your Maltipoo puppies is to provide them with their preferred rewards, be them treats, their favorite toys, or cheering. Like all young puppies, 8-week Maltipoo puppies don’t have the longest attention span and it is best to keep training sessions short, frequent, and fun.

Maltipoo puppies also respond well to a calm approach without shouting or resorting to any type of punishment. As a sensitive dog breed, Maltipoo puppies will not respond well to any form of harsh treatment.
Maltipoo puppies are also very easy to socialize given their natural friendliness towards everyone and everything.

Although they are not shy or easily frightened, it is always best to begin introducing them to various distractions and people, when they are still very young. Choose an area where your Maltipoo puppy is comfortable in and allow them to meet your friends or visitors. A low-distraction area is ideal to begin with. As your puppy gets comfortable with meeting new people, you can move on to an area with more distractions and allow your puppy to meet other people and pets. Ideally, your Maltipoo puppy will be happy to make friends in any environment, as their nature dictates.

History

Maltipoo puppies are created by crossing a purebred Maltese dog with a purebred Miniature Poodle. As hybrids of two different dog breeds, Maltipoos inherit their parent’s temperaments, intelligence, and a combination of looks from both breeds. Although Maltipoo puppies may have existed over time as a mix between dogs from a non-pure lineage, the first Maltipoo crossbreed of two purebred dogs was done in the 1990s in the United States.

The reason behind crossbreeds such as the Maltipoo, was to create a new type of dog breed that had fewer health problems and better hypoallergenic qualities. The Maltese and the Poodle breeds were not only chosen for their allergy-friendly qualities, but also for their balanced temperaments, friendliness, intelligence, lack of aggression, and gorgeous looks. Since the 90s, Maltipoo puppies have seen a steady rise in popularity worldwide. In the past 10 years, Maltipoo breeders have furthered the Maltipoo by breeding it down in size and creating more color diversity. Known Maltipoo sizes and colors include:
